The Bay of Arcachon is synonymous with oyster farming! This emblematic region is inextricably linked with the cultivation of oysters, a veritable local treasure. To learn more about this fascinating world, visit the Maison de l’Huître. This fascinating museum plunges you into the heart of oyster farming, from ancestral know-how to the modern innovations that perpetuate this tradition.
The visit is divided into three stages, each lasting around an hour. It all begins with the screening of the film “The Life of the Oyster”, which shows the stages in the growth of this mollusc. Next, a guided tour of the museum’s rooms will introduce you to the history of oyster farming, breeding techniques, reproduction cycles, different species and natural predators. Finally, a freely accessible outdoor trail allows you to observe the environment and facilities dedicated to this essential activity in the Bay of Arcachon.
The little extra for primary school children: discover the oyster-farming profession while having fun? Nothing could be easier with the “P’tit passeport de l’Huître” (games, quizzes and riddles to solve an enigma).
Allow 1h for a traditional visit and 1h30 with a discovery booklet.
