The ‘tchanquées’ huts are distinctive structures situated on Île aux Oiseaux, in the Arcachon Bay. These huts on stilts have become iconic symbols of the region.
The ‘cabanes tchanquées’ were built in the late 19th century by oyster farmers. The term ‘tchanqué’ comes from the Gascon word ‘tchanque’, meaning ‘stilt’.
Originally, these huts were used to keep watch over the oyster beds. Oyster farmers would take shelter there and monitor the tides and weather conditions.
Whether by boat or sea kayak, set off to explore the famous ‘cabanes tchanquées’, standing majestically in the heart of the Arcachon Basin, and take a tour of Île aux Oiseaux!
